Gangsters go on rampage
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: Members of a gang running a protection money racket smashed up a VCD shop here on Monday night when the owner refused to pay them.
Yesterday afternoon, five of them were in police custody.
The five, aged 18 to 27, were identified from CCTV images recorded at the shop.
Miri police chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim said the police would take the appropriate action against these gangsters as well as the gang leaders.
The gang had demanded RM500 protection money and when the owner spurned their demand, at least seven gangsters returned with steel rods and bars and smashed up the shop.
A few days ago, The Star ran several stories on extortionists and protection money racketeers trying to re-establish their reign of terror in this city.

Yes, I understand that doing harm to someone doing business is a crime.
Yes, I'm sure the public knows about the existence of Ah Long and Samseng.
And Yes, of course the police has the duty of ensuring the peace and stability of the city itself. Whatmore after Miri has achieved it's City status.

But one obvious question still remains here.

Why is the police doing nothing about piracy in Miri? Look at the picture and you know that those ain't original VCD's. We actually DO know how fake VCD's look like. I thought the government implemented rules nationwide to curb this problem a very long time ago. No?
