Sex more valued than money

Wednesday May 21, 2008
The Star Online

MIRI: Sex before money – that seemed to be on the minds of a group of armed robbers who struck at a housing estate.
Clad only in their underwear and face-masks, the five men broke into a house, tied up its four occupants, then searched the house for the Indonesian maid instead of the loot.
When they found the maid not to their “taste”, they beat her up and then robbed the entire family.
Miri police are now looking for the group of foreigners who escaped with more than RM10,000 in cash and belongings.
The incident happened on Monday at the Morsjaya commercial centre outside the city centre.
The victims, who lodged a report at the Miri Central Police Station, said the robbers broke into the house in the wee hours of the morning.
They were not wearing shirts or trousers, only underwear. They headed straight for the rooms after tying up four of the family members who were in the house, said one of the victims in his report.
“They were searching for the Indonesian maid who lives in the house. They found the maid, but after looking at her, they beat her up with the handle of the parang they were carrying,” said a police source.
Meanwhile, late on Monday night, another armed robbery took place at a businessman's house in a posh residential estate in Luak Bay, outside the city centre.
A group of six men armed with parang broke into the house and escaped with more than RM50,000 in cash and jewellery after tying up the entire household.
Miri police chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim said that as of yesterday afternoon, the police have arrested six men.
“We do not know as yet whether these robberies were carried out by the same gang,” he said.
ACP Jamaluddin advised residents to beef up security in their homes if they intend to keep large amounts of cash and jewellery there.

Not even Ramasun’s tail could stop these robbers

Article from the Star by Stephen Then,

MIRI: While residents in northern Sarawak huddled every night in fear of yet another storm from Typhoon Ramasun's ''tail'', a gang of armed robbers struck in Miri City, targeting the family of a rich towkay who is involved in the shipping and fishing industry.
This gang of six masked men armed with shotguns held up the towkay's family of 11 in their house at a residential estate on Thursday night at about 9pm. The men wearing haze masks tied up the entire household before ransacking their house and robbing them of cash and jewellery worth some RM40,000 while the family were holed up in their house in fear of Typhoon Ramassun's ''tail''.
The robbers beat up the towkay, who is in his 60s, before looting the household.
However, the towkay was not seriously injured.

The armed men were said to have busted into the house from a back door while the family members were in the living room.

Miri Police Chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim on Friday said the police have reason to believe that the gang could be made up of foreigners.

''We are still investigating. We have obtained some details from the victims and descriptions of the robbers,'' he said.

Police on Friday launched a manhunt for these armed and dangerous men.

What a shameless and cruel act of the robbers! Want fast money jual burit la..

Sarawak gets tail-end of typhoon Ramasun

Article by the Star as Reported by Stephen Then,

MIRI: The freak storm that uprooted giant trees, blew off rooftops, bent metal signboards and left a trail of destruction in its path in northern Sarawak was caused by the "tail" of typhoon Ramasun that raged near the Philippines.
The Sarawak Meteorological Department on Wednesday said this tail-end of the typhoon is expected to linger around in the northern Borneo region, especially Miri and Limbang, until Saturday.

"The northern half of the state is feeling the effect of the tail-end of the typhoon. The typhoon carries very strong winds and creates very high waves.
"The wind is more than 50km per hour and the waves at least 4.5m in the South China Sea. We have issued warnings against travelling by small boats in the South China Sea offshore northern Borneo until Saturday at least," said the department.

Wednesday morning saw frantic efforts by people affected by the sudden freak storm to clean up and repair their homes. Many houses were affected, especially in the Tudan resettlement scheme and in the Piasau Malay kampung, while trees weighing tonnes along the Miri-Lutong highway and Pujut highway were uprooted. The Fire and Rescue Department received more than 40 reports of incidents related to the storm, but there were no major injuries.

Some pictures of the aftermath coming soon.

Miri International Jazz Festival 2008

This time round Miri would be holding it's Jazz Festival for the third time on the 9th and 10th of May.

Tickets could be obtained from Visitor's Information Centre. (That's near the bus station in the heart of the City).
If you have no time to get to STB, tickets could be booked online from http://www.ticketcharge.com.my/
Or by phone: +6 03 2241 9999

This year ticket prices run for RM60 per day.

For the Jazz Festival last year, ticket prices only went for RM50 perday. They even had a promotion of RM90 for two days. The year before that was even better. That was in 2006 when tickets costs only like RM40 each, if memory serves. Looks like they have been increasing the price year after year ey'.

Anyway, if I have time maybe I'll post some pictures I'm going to take for 2008's Jazz Festival.

Wait for it! =D

p/s: I heard on the radio that Trax FM is coming to town.

Gangsters go on rampage
By STEPHEN THEN
MIRI: Members of a gang running a protection money racket smashed up a VCD shop here on Monday night when the owner refused to pay them.
Yesterday afternoon, five of them were in police custody.
The five, aged 18 to 27, were identified from CCTV images recorded at the shop.
Miri police chief Asst Comm Jamaluddin Ibrahim said the police would take the appropriate action against these gangsters as well as the gang leaders.
The gang had demanded RM500 protection money and when the owner spurned their demand, at least seven gangsters returned with steel rods and bars and smashed up the shop.
A few days ago, The Star ran several stories on extortionists and protection money racketeers trying to re-establish their reign of terror in this city.

Yes, I understand that doing harm to someone doing business is a crime.
Yes, I'm sure the public knows about the existence of Ah Long and Samseng.
And Yes, of course the police has the duty of ensuring the peace and stability of the city itself. Whatmore after Miri has achieved it's City status.

But one obvious question still remains here.

Why is the police doing nothing about piracy in Miri? Look at the picture and you know that those ain't original VCD's. We actually DO know how fake VCD's look like. I thought the government implemented rules nationwide to curb this problem a very long time ago. No?

Miri: Land of Oil

Miri, second city from the Land of Sarawak; Land of the Headhunters. I dedicate this blog to Miri as I have been staying here for more than 10 years and the city has almost become a part of me. This blog will include pictures from all over Miri; whatever you name, you got it. It takes time as this blog is new. But I'll build it up.

Watch this space.
